Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Okene Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State is geographically situated in a region vulnerable to various natural disasters, including flooding, erosion, and landslides. The geopolitical context of Okene, shaped by its ethnic diversity, regional politics, and local governance structures, significantly influences disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies. Disasters in the area are exacerbated by inadequate planning and coordination, influenced by local political dynamics and a lack of effective regional collaboration (Jibril & Usman, 2023). This study aims to explore the role of geopolitical factors in shaping DRR efforts in Okene, with a focus on how regional governance, ethnic divisions, and political patronage affect the implementation of disaster mitigation policies.
The study will investigate how local authorities, in collaboration with state and federal agencies, address disaster risks. Additionally, it will explore how the socio-political fabric of Okene influences disaster preparedness and response measures, with a specific emphasis on the roles of local leaders, community groups, and regional partnerships in DRR.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to implement disaster risk reduction strategies, Okene LGA faces significant challenges in reducing vulnerability to natural disasters. These challenges are often influenced by geopolitical factors, including the lack of coordination between local and regional governments, political instability, and regional ethnic dynamics that affect resource allocation and decision-making processes. This study seeks to explore how these geopolitical factors influence DRR initiatives in Okene and propose solutions for improving disaster resilience in the area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for local government authorities, disaster management agencies, and policymakers in Okene LGA. By identifying how geopolitical factors shape DRR strategies, the findings will provide insights into more effective disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. The study will also contribute to the broader discourse on disaster risk management in Nigeria, particularly in regions with diverse political and ethnic landscapes.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Okene LGA in Kogi State, examining how geopolitical factors affect disaster risk reduction. Limitations include the challenges in accessing reliable data due to the politically sensitive nature of disaster response and the varying levels of disaster preparedness across communities.
